I live in New Jersey now. I lived in Philadelphia PA. I had a vet in Philadelphia who I was happy with until the last time I took my basset in for her shots and checkup. Bailey is very anxious when we go to the Vet. She gets nervous and can't sit still. The assistant was having a hard time getting Bailey's temp. I bought her in so the vet could look at two bumps that appeared on her along with a small growth on her leg. I wanted her nails to be clipped and ears checked. I begged her to give her something so that Bailey would calm down. She gave her a low dose of Valium and insisted Bailey be muzzled. It didn't help and Bailey wouldn't even let the vet check her. She cried about the muzzle and wouldn't sit still. It was gut wrenching. After $300, I went home with Advantix and heartworm meds. She was never even seen. I need someone who is basset sauvy.

I found your web site address in an article that appeared in the DAYTON DAILY NEWS in Dayton,Ohio on June 12,2005.I have a bassett hound that I adopted from the local animal shelter in March. She is not my first Bassett, but she is my first adoption from a shelter. She is about a year old and still full of all that puppy playfulness. She is also a chewer and will chew anything that catches her eye.I'm hoping that will go away as she grows older.
I am going to keep your web site in my favorite places. the articles that I have read so far have been interesting and educational. Keep up the good work!

Having been owned by a handsome male Basset (Lucky) and a beautiful female Basset (Lady), my husband and I appreciate the humor and sometimes not so funny situations of other "ownees". Your site has been a sweet/sad love affair for both of us. We lost Lucky 2 years ago at the age of 12, and Lady followed him last year at the age of 12. 12 years is simply not long enough to love these priceless dogs. My husband said he simply could not lose another Basset and would not consider having another one. However, since we discovered The Daily Drool site, he has decided that ok, one more time. We are on a wait list with a wonderful Michigan Basset breeder (Bentley Bassets) in Lapeer, Michigan. Until then, we will satisfy our Basset cravings with all of your wonderful members. Thank you for being there and for caring so much about Bassets --sometimes frustrating, but always with you for life.

I have two beautiful basset hounds. the mother who is eight, and is so full of energy and mischief, and the son who is six. he opens peanut butter jars and mayo jars, i can never catch him doing it, but i buy only plastic, as i am afraid he could get hurt. Has anyone heard of a bassett hound doing that? I put a jar in front of him and of course he looked at me like i was crazy, so i just gave up. he gets plenty of food,i just think he is a snacker.

Have thoroughly enjoyed reading the "drool". I rescued a 4 mo old basset directly from an owner 3 years ago. I love this little guy (well actually I call him my nuclear basset because he's BIG, not overweight tho) and found my way to basset rescue (Suncoast basset rescue, FL). Right now I am fostering my first hound at 11 years young and he has been a delight to bring into my home. I fear that I am going to fail fostering on my first one!!
Your site has brought a lot of info specific to this breed and I've enjoyed each and every digest. I hope that the Drool will continue after Nancy's retirement.

My Precious Princess, Delilah, who I am food slave to, has just gotten over Bronchitis. It was very painful to watch her cough, just like a human with that awful sound. The big difference was she really had trouble breathing when having a coughing spell. Thank goodness for her Vet, he gave her a very strong cough pill which stopped the coughing completely within 12 hours. So if you hear your basset hound coughing like someone wiht Bronchitis, get to your Vet as soon as possible. She is all better now and she is very happy to be over this awful disease.

I wanted to thank you for a wonderfully informative website. I have recently adopted a basset hound mix from our local shelter, and I needed advice on grooming and training. I will not actually receive my dog, Matthew, until the end of April because I have just purchased my first home and will not have a yard until I move. Matthew is 1 1/2, and the folks at the rescue league believe he is mixed with a golden retriever. He has the basset body with the retriever head. I think he and his breed as a whole are fantastic! Mr. Flanagan--my 7 year old tri cleo has some of the same problems yours has--he is afraid of some of my friends and anyone who comes to the house to do any type of work. I can hold him and feel him shake-when someone is in the room that he doesnt like. with me, it is a different story he is my dog and comes running to see me as soon as I step in the house. he doesnt sleep in a crate-which leads me to wonder if the previous owner used the crate as disipline. short of seeking more professional help the only thing you might try is see if another dog or cat seems to calm him down good luck!

My name is Peter Flanagan, and I am the 'slave' to a 7 year old Basset named Oscar. We adopted Oscar from Bassets To The Rescue in 1999 in New Jersey, and we've given him a loving home and have taken excellent care of him. However, there is a problem.
I know all about the breed's stubbornness, but Oscar poses a challenge. He is fearful and completely non-accepting of me. If I walk into the room he's in, he'll scamper out. The only place I can pet him or scratch behind is ears is when he is in his crate, ready to sleep. Otherwise he runs away from me. This has been going on since 1999.
If I corner him, he will defecate. He shakes sometimes if I've been too close. But when I'm not around, Oscar is the life of the party. We assume that Oscar was seriously abused by his previous owner, but no volume of treats or food have worked for me to win him over. I tried to use those flower drops in his water, but I think I'd have to use the whole bottle to get him to relax near me. I do take Oscar on mile-long scampers which he truly loves, but he is at the absolute end of his leash. He gets startled if I get too close. And at age 7, he isn't about to change easily.
I haven't given up, but I'm close. I am always respectful of Oscar, and I talk to him and I do treat him properly. He may be having pack-assimilation problems, and is fearful of the Alpha role player (he's assuming it's me; my wife may have other ideas). He howls a greeting to everyone in my family, but when I walk in you hear his paws on the wood floors, scurrying away.
Any ideas?
If someone is knowledgeable in this area, I'd love to try something different in order to gain Oscar's trust. He is an adorable, funny, great dog, and it is a small matter of heartbreak for me. Since I was a small boy, I've always wanted a Basset. I'm 48 now, I finally have the hound, and he's terrified of me. Thanks for any ideas you might have, and if you could forward this to someone who might have a clue as to how I can go about gaining Oscar's friendship and trust, I'd be so happy to listen.
Thank you for anything you can do,
Pete Flanagan

I was blue so I thought I would look up basset hounds and came across your website. I had a great dog who I alway's called my 1st born. He would have been 15 yrs. 12/29/04. He was really ill so I had to let him go 12/7/04. It was the hardest thing I have ever done and then to watch my children 9 and 11 say good-bye was heart wrenching. He was a great dog and I miss him always following me and he hated doors closed so I miss him nudging on the doors to get in. Anyone who has a bassett knows they need alot of love and attention and are great family/companions. Nieko was his name and I truly miss him. signed broken/hurting heart.

What a delightful website! Our 1-and-a-half year old basset, Sebastian, looks remarkably like many of the bassets featured. We rescued him at age 8 mos. from an animal shelter. His previous owner gave him up for "chewing." Well, duh. Sebastian was a baby--and he was teething! He weighed 38 lbs. when he came to live with us; now he weighs about 54 lbs. Sebastian (aka "Puppers" and "Doe Eyes" and "Humble Pie," etc.) is thrilled to have a forever-family to love. We are crazy about him, too. He gets along great with his older "brother" and "sister" Buddy and Jazz. They are rescued dogs, as well. Oh--one more detail about Sebastian: his ear span is 24 inches. :)

Great site...Former red&white Basset owner. Huckleberry (Huck) died this past Jan. of stomach and bowel problems. He was so special. He was strong till the end and I am very proud to say that I was able to spend 10 great years with him. His personality won so many people over. Nothing made me feel more proud when people would stop what they were doing just to come over and see him while he was on a walk. I look forward to getting another basset soon but I don't know when. Once again, this is a great site.

Enjoy this website thanks to my basset Hector (aka Hilarious Hector), who I found abandoned several years ago. I now enjoy the devotion that comes from an animal that finds a human he can trust after being mistreated by others, and he enjoys being thoroughly spoiled along with his two mixed-breed sisters previously rescued from local shelters. We make quite the interesting "pack" when we go out for fun and exercise.

We love the site, we raise funds for the Illinois Basset Rescue through our store in Fenwick Island, DE. www.fenwickgifts.com. We have lots of Basset hound suncatchers for sale, but that is because of our tremendous love for our two Bassets (1 is 10 and is a rescue, 2nd is 6 years old and we have had her since she was a puppy). We have a dachshund too, he runs the girls around. My office is filled with all types of Basset hound memorabilia, my staff laughs at me every time I get a new basset item. My wife and I have a new mini-van specifically for the dogs. We even took our oldest Basset with us to purchase the van, she had to be able to get into it easier than our Jeep that we traded. We are true Basset hound lovers!!! Thank you.

Very nice site. I've learned a lot. I have a 65 pound English Basset..(beagle/basset) Mr. Doo is his name. He's been quite trying as he was already 9 months old and hardly trained when he came into my life. He eats and chews on everything...including my children, unfortunately, from time to time. His last chewing venture being that of the end nozzle of my garden hose seems to have gotten him into a bit of trouble. Being a Sunday...a vet trip will have to wait till tomorrow. Research brought me to your very nice site. Wish me luck!

I am so glad I was refered to this site. I am a 35 year old retired fireman who was burned over 85% 3rd degree while putting out an oil tank fire. I lost all my fingers and now have only a pinch with the help of toe transplants. I took up woodworking to keep busy. It was not an easy start. It took alot of thinking and patience to get the job done, and still do it safe. 7 years later I've gotten good enough to start thinking of doing it as a business. Any help I can be I'll sure give it my best. Thank you.

I have two bassets, Fred and Ginger. They have both been having episodes of limping and not feeling great. We took them to the vet several times and each time, they really did not know but came up with some type of diagnosis. We received anti-inflammatory medication, which helped. However, they did start back running and jumping and eventually started limping again. Thank you for the information about this condition. Great web-site.

Your website has been so helpful! We spent so much money trying to figure out why our basset hound (who just turned 2) was limping. The vet couldn't come up with anything besides the excuse he was just trying to get attention. So after hundreds of dollars I finally find your website and learn about PANO. Wish I would have known about that before spending all the money I did!

I love your site and I love our new (12 weeks) puppy, Annabelle. Of course we think she is beautiful, how can we submit her photo for your gallery? Do we need to be members, because I work at home as a Webmaster and cannot afford to have a lot of e-mails as described on your membership information page. Nonetheless, I would like to show her off. This is my first experience with the breed and I swear that she talks to me! I know that sounds crazy, but she has different tones and inflictions when she is telling us something. Also, she adores my 8 year old son, if we were to submit a photo, are humans allowed in the shot, we have a really cut one of the two of them (?)...
Thanks so much, she is absolutely wonderful, and I have owned Keeshonds, Irish Wolfhounds and a wonderful Golden Retriever; Rudy, but I must admit I do like this breed, although I was hesitant at first!
Many Regards,
Douglas Meredith

I love your website and have just adopted a new puppy who is almost 10 weeks old. I am having so much trouble with him though and could use some help with ideas. He has been pooping in his crate at night even though we take him outside every 2-3 hours. He has a small area in the crate since we used the divided, just enough room for him to sleep in. Also he pees all over the area I keep him gated in the kitchen. Even on his blanket. I don't understand, I thought they didn't go where they sleep. I take him out hourly during the day too. I don't know what to do. Please email me! Thanks!

Don't you just love all the bassets in the weekly poll? I wish they could all win.
Watch out for your Bassets eating the Cicadas! They can cause a lot of problems including the need for surgery to get the things removed from stomachs and/or intestines. They are not digestable and can cause blockages. My Vet says discourage pets from eating any. Fortunately my Delilah, who I am food slave to, has smelled them and put her nose in the air. She'll have nothing to do with them. I am really happy about that. Usually she's up for trying anything she can get her mouth around, especially chicken bones. So I watch for those when we are walking as people seem to think it's okay to throw garbage on the ground. Most of the time I get them first, but when I don't I have my hand in her mouth in a heartbeat and am taking tham out before any harm is done. Her Dad got a chicken bone and ate it and perforated his stomach. After 2 surgeries he died. I would be devastated if that happeneed to my Delilah.
Love the Daily Drool. Have gotten a lot of books from the suggestions on Amazon.com that are really great too.

I am the proud owner of my very first Basset Hound, Bernard. While I did receive my baby by suprise, through much reading I learned the proper way to care for him. He loves to chew on things such as window sills, but I still love him. He has to be the most gorgeous thing on earth!!

Have you seen any websites with pics from the 2004 Boardwaddle at the Ocean City Doo Dah Parade? Looking for a particular lady - Gretchen the Bellydancing Basset. I sewed her costume. She looked absolutely bewitching in my kitchen at her final fitting, but I was curious to see how she looked as she was struttin' her stuff at the parade!

Lost our "Lucy" two years ago to auto-imune desease, took forever to grieve her loss. Last fall, put our name on Basset recue at our local Humaine Soc. Christmas came and didn't hear from the Humaine Soc. so when we saw an ad for Basset puppies in our local paper we were ready. We named her Lilly, well about 2 months ago we got a call from the Humaine Soc. telling of a 5 month old Basset puppy that needed a good Basset home, well anyway we now have 2 puppies and 2 other dogs and a cat. Well, talk about a 3 ring circus. They love each other and have made a big hole in our hearts heal. It's a good thing we are retired and have lots of time to spend with them. Joan

we have 3 rescues: Oscar (aka Gump) Rosie (aka twinkie) and Max (aka stingray jackson). Happy, spoiled houndies-big mama's babies. They bring us great joy. If we had more room I would be happy to be food slave to a herd of relinquished senior bassets to waddle and sniff, sleep in the sun and enjoy the rest of their days.

My basset hound has had chronic ear infections for all 4 years of his life. We've tried everything from going to the vet for antibiotics, changing his food, cleaning his ears ourselves and nothing seems to help him. I am now out of work and taking care of a newborn and would like to know if there are any remedies that could be shared with me that don't cost a lot of money and do work. Otomaxand ear cleaner have not been successful. Changing him to a non-allergenic diet has not helped. He shakes his head daily and has a brown discharge. Also, any tips on shedding? Thanks.

I really enjoy reading "The Daily Drool". It is very helpful for basset hound owners.
I adopted "Millie" from Ohio Basset Rescue and on August 11, 2002, she came to live with "Maggie", my basset that I've had since she was a little pup at 6 weeks old. I met "Millie" at the "Meet Your New Best Friend at the Zoo" event at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in June, 2002. I fell in love with Millie that day and knew that I had to have her. "Millie" was in the loving and excellent care of Elaine Brown, her foster MOM, after being rescued that past February. Millie is | |
